Sheki
Sheki
is one of the largest and oldest cities in Azerbaijan. There is
reason to believe that Sheki could be as old as 2,500 years. During
the 1st century B.C. the Sheki tribe together with the Albanians
defeated Pompey's army.
During the Silk era, the Sheki road had been at the crossroads
of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The city, named after the
Sheki tribe, is located high in the Caucasus on a fertile plain.
Here silk, carpets, tobacco, grain, nuts and beef are produced.
This region of Azerbaijan is one of the most picturesque which
strikes an interesting contrast to the arid region surrounding
Baku.
Sheki was also the summer home of the Sheki Khans. In 1762 the
Sheki ruler Hussein Khan began construction of the Palace of the
Sheki Khans.
The
best masters from Shusha, Shirvan and Sheki worked on the frescos
which cover the walls of the palace.
The windows are decorated with fantastic stained glass designs
each of which contain thousands of details.
Enjoy the interior of the perfectly restored caravansaray and
you will never forget the taste of the famous sweet "Pakhlava".
